The War Memorial Park outdoor fitness trail was officially launched on Monday 9 January, by Olympic Gold medallist and Coventry sports legend, David Moorcroft and Coventry’s Lord Mayor, Cllr Lindsley Harvard.
The trail is located between the Park and Ride car park and the Visitor Centre. It is made up of nine pieces of equipment to help with balance, coordination and strength, which people can complete at their own pace.
The Lord Mayor, Cllr Lindsley Harvard said:
“It really is a wonderful idea and something very simple that will help to make a difference to people’s fitness and encourage more of us to get out of the house and get a bit more active.
A special thank you goes to the Friends of War Memorial Park for their imagination in coming up with the project and their hard work in seeing it become a reality, along with Manager Ann Akerman and all the staff here at the park.”
Coventry’s David Moorcroft OBE enjoyed testing out the equipment:
“It really is a wonderful idea and something very simple that will help to make a difference to people’s fitness and encourage more of us to get out of the house and get a bit more active.”
The Friends of War Memorial Park are thrilled to see people using the new equipment:
“We hope that this facility is going to make a real difference to the people of Coventry and are delighted that the project is now in use. We are extremely grateful to WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund for providing the majority of funding, as we would not have been able to go ahead without its support.”
Funding was also received from Dr Bryan Phillips and public donations.
WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund.
Joe Newby, WREN Grant Manager, said “Good quality facilities, which are accessible to all, are vital for community well-being and it is excellent to see the equipment being so well-used. We are delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile project and we are really pleased with the outcome”.
