The SS Great Britain was a revolutionary vessel. Designed by the 19th Century engineering giant Isambard Kingdom Brunel, she was the world’s first iron-hulled screw driven ocean liner, propelled by a combination of steam and sail power.
After 37 years sitting on the seabed in the Falklands, ‘Sparrow Cove’, the SS Great Britain was brought back to its home in Bristol in 1970. She has since been restored to her former glory and continues to be maintained.
FLP stepped in to manufacture the ships ‘climbing strops’ when they required a time complicated order. Made with black rope and galvanised thimbles, the order had to be ready and delivered within a 5 hour slot to coordinate with the floating crane that could only operate during certain tide times.
