Resistograph Testing So Why do you need to test?
Because of woods natural properties any timber playground and outdoor fitness equipment should be regularly checked for any hidden defects and decay.
Very often the extent of deterioration cannot be detected by visual inspection alone or using traditional methods such as a sounding the timber with a hammer. Such techniques rely on subjective assessments which can inevitably lead to erroneous conclusions and unnecessary repairs and costs.
How do we test?
Using a rotating 1mm steel needle with a chisel cutting tip we drill a unobtrusive hole into the wood at a constant speed, without compromising any structural makeup of the timber. The energy required to do this is monitored and recorded by the instrument, the device is not only capable of detecting advanced decay, cavities and cracks but also early signs of decay – giving clear, unambiguous and objective information regarding the condition of the wood in minutes.
Resistograph testing is a fast, reliable and accurate method for the detection of early timber defects and does not rely on an individual’s subjective assessment. It is ideal for this purpose as it is suitable for timber inspection both above and below ground. Although rot can occur anywhere on the play structure, the area immediately above and below ground level is generally more susceptible. In these areas decay fungi can take hold unnoticed due to favorable moisture, oxygen and temperature conditions. The testing is suitable for testing all types of timber used in the construction of playground equipment – including Robinia.
What happens next?
Apart from measuring the penetration resistance, our Resistograph testing also has the unique needle FEED rate recording facility which is very sensitive to early timber deterioration. Once the testing is complete an electronic report will be sent showing the penetration and FEED results.
