St Francis of Assisi, Norwich

St John’s Catholic Infant School and St Thomas More Catholic Junior School amalgamated and opened as a new Catholic primary school on the St Thomas More site on Jessopp Rd, Norwich called St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School offering education for children between the ages of 4 to 11.

With the creation of a new school on the site of a junior school it provides the challenges of not only providing play facilities with larger capacity but also facilities which catered for different ages group. FLP worked very closely with the school team and main contractors to relocate existing equipment, then design and install new challenging and creative play equipment spread over 8 areas.

Over a period of 6 consultation meeting a detailed proposal was drawn up working closely with the head teacher also involving those who would ultimately use and manage the new equipment. The project was split into 5 phases:

Phase 1

A new 3 tower multiplay unit constructed in our split resistant Safalog was installed onto the existing playing field including safagrass safety surfacing.

Phase 2

The current infant’s area was just a baron piece of tarmac, within this area planters with integrated seats where provided with a play boat, train and wigwam as play features.

Phase 3

The reception area consisted of two areas. The first being a shaded grass area where there was more moss than grass and the second was a large open expanse of tarmac. The existing grass was removed, a drainage base was constructed and over laid with 280m2 of synthetic grass could be used and look green for 12 months of the year. A trim trail, wigwams and large covered sand pit.

Phase 4

The final and largest phase was the development of the reception playarea with the construction of a castle, canopies, playhouses and a water play feature with a water lift, lock gates and play bowls.

A unique selling point for this contract was our ability to use standard products wherever possible to keep costs down but at the time to be able to adapt these products to meet the customer’s needs.
